When You Should Test Your Water

Water quality is not static. These are the moments when testing changes a decision you are about to make.

You just moved in

You inherit whatever the previous owner's plumbing, softener, or water heater left behind. Test before you buy equipment you may not need.

You're on a private well

Wells are not regulated or monitored by anyone. No utility is testing your water for you — that responsibility is entirely yours.

Spots, scale, or crusty fixtures

White film on glassware, scale on the showerhead, and soap that won't lather are hardness symptoms you can confirm with a simple test.

Taste, smell, or color changed

A chlorine smell, metallic taste, rotten-egg odor, or rust tint all point to different causes. Testing tells you which.

Someone in the house is pregnant or an infant

Nitrate and lead thresholds that are acceptable for adults are not acceptable for infants. Test before the baby arrives.

Your home was built before 1988

Lead service lines and lead solder were legal in North Carolina until the mid-1980s. Older Triangle neighborhoods are the ones worth checking.

Appliances are failing early

Water heaters, dishwashers, and ice makers dying ahead of schedule is one of the most expensive hard-water symptoms — and the easiest to confirm.

If you are on a private well, read this part twice

Municipal systems in Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill are regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and tested continuously. Private wells are not. No agency samples your well, and no one will notify you if something changes. Roughly one in five North Carolina households draws from a private well — if you are one of them, annual bacteria and nitrate testing is the baseline, not an optional extra. What You Should Test For

The right panel depends entirely on where your water comes from.

C On city water

Hardness

Drives scale, appliance wear, and soap use. The single most useful number for sizing a softener.

Chlorine / chloramine

The taste and smell most Triangle homeowners notice first. Also the precursor to disinfection byproducts.

Disinfection byproducts (TTHMs, HAAs)

Formed when chlorine reacts with organic matter in surface water. Every Triangle utility draws from surface water.

PFAS

Detected across the Triangle. Requires a lab — no strip or in-home kit measures it.

Lead and copper

Comes from your home's plumbing, not the utility's treatment plant. Only a tap sample tells you.

TDS

Total dissolved solids. A general indicator that helps confirm whether filtration is doing its job.

Total coliform and E. coli

The one test you should never skip. Bacteria contamination is invisible, odorless, and an immediate health risk.

Nitrate

Agricultural and septic runoff. Above 10 ppm it is dangerous for infants — this is not a "monitor it" situation.

Iron and manganese

Rust staining, black specks, metallic taste. Extremely common in NC wells and very fixable.

Hydrogen sulfide

The rotten-egg smell. Usually bacterial or mineral in origin, and the fix depends on which.

Hardness

Well water in the Piedmont is frequently harder than municipal supply, and nobody is treating it before it reaches you.

pH

Low pH corrodes copper pipes and leaches metals into your water. High pH accelerates scaling.

Understanding Your Test Results

Clear water tells you nothing. These are the numbers that decide whether you act.

Common Questions

How do I test my water quality at home?

The fastest route is a hardware-store test strip kit — dip it, wait a minute, and compare to the color chart. That gives you hardness, pH, and chlorine within a rough range. Strips will not detect PFAS, low-level lead, or bacteria, so treat them as a screening tool rather than an answer. For a real number on hardness and TDS, a professional in-home test takes about twenty minutes. For anything health-related, send a sample to a certified lab.

Do I need to test city water if the utility already publishes a report?

Yes, and for a specific reason. Your utility's Consumer Confidence Report describes water as it leaves the treatment plant, not as it arrives at your tap. Lead and copper come from your home's own service line and plumbing, and hardness changes as it travels. The published report is a useful starting point — it just is not a measurement of your kitchen faucet.

How often should I test well water?

Test for total coliform bacteria and nitrate every year, without exception. Run a broader panel covering metals, hardness, pH, and iron every three years. Test immediately if the taste, smell, or color changes, if the well is flooded, if you replace the pump, or if anyone in the household becomes pregnant. Private wells in North Carolina are not monitored by any agency, so this schedule is entirely on the homeowner.

Is hard water in the Triangle dangerous?

Hard water is not a health hazard — it is a cost and maintenance problem. Across Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, and Chapel Hill, hardness typically runs 6 to 12 grains per gallon. At that level you get scale in the water heater, shortened appliance life, spotting on glassware, and noticeably higher soap and detergent use. The health-relevant contaminants in Triangle water are a separate question, and they show up in disinfection byproduct and PFAS testing rather than hardness testing.

What do I do once I have my results?

Match the treatment to the finding rather than buying a system first. Hardness is solved with a softener at the point of entry. Chlorine, taste, and odor call for whole-home carbon filtration. Lead, nitrate, and PFAS are addressed at the point of use with certified reverse osmosis. Iron, sulfur, and bacteria on a well need dedicated media filtration or UV. If a result comes back with bacteria present or lead above 0.015 mg/L, stop drinking the water and address it before anything else.
