Well water in the Piedmont is frequently harder than municipal supply, and nobody is treating it before it reaches you.
Low pH corrodes copper pipes and leaches metals into your water. High pH accelerates scaling.

The fastest route is a hardware-store test strip kit — dip it, wait a minute, and compare to the color chart. That gives you hardness, pH, and chlorine within a rough range. Strips will not detect PFAS, low-level lead, or bacteria, so treat them as a screening tool rather than an answer. Yes, and for a specific reason. Your utility's Consumer Confidence Report describes water as it leaves the treatment plant, not as it arrives at your tap. Lead and copper come from your home's own service line and plumbing, and hardness changes as it travels. The published report is a useful starting point — it just is not a measurement of your kitchen faucet.
Test for total coliform bacteria and nitrate every year, without exception. Run a broader panel covering metals, hardness, pH, and iron every three years. Test immediately if the taste, smell, or color changes, if the well is flooded, if you replace the pump, or if anyone in the household becomes pregnant. Private wells in North Carolina are not monitored by any agency, so this schedule is entirely on the homeowner.
Hard water is not a health hazard — it is a cost and maintenance problem. Across Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, and Chapel Hill, hardness typically runs 6 to 12 grains per gallon. At that level you get scale in the water heater, shortened appliance life, spotting on glassware, and noticeably higher soap and detergent use. The health-relevant contaminants in Triangle water are a separate question, and they show up in disinfection byproduct and PFAS testing rather than hardness testing.
Match the treatment to the finding rather than buying a system first. Hardness is solved with a softener at the point of entry. Chlorine, taste, and odor call for whole-home carbon filtration. Lead, nitrate, and PFAS are addressed at the point of use with certified reverse osmosis. Iron, sulfur, and bacteria on a well need dedicated media filtration or UV.
