Quick answer

How do Culligan, Kinetico, RainSoft and EcoWater compare?

All four sell through local dealers who test your water at home, so the dealer matters as much as the brand. Kinetico stands apart with non-electric twin-tank softeners and a published 10-year warranty on Premier XP. Culligan also offers rentals. EcoWater, the oldest, adds a salt-free line. RainSoft is a Pentair-owned Aquion brand.

All four national brands sell through local dealers, so price, installation quality and service depend heavily on the dealer in your area.

Honest Water vs Culligan

Emmett J. Culligan founded Culligan in 1936, and the company is headquartered in Rosemont, Illinois. It sells through a network of roughly 1,000 dealers worldwide.

Culligan's own site details rentals, with month-to-month and long-term agreements and rent-to-own options that vary by dealer. For homeowners who would rather own, we offer 0% APR financing for up to 24 months, subject to credit approval, and every system carries our lifetime warranty.

Honest Water vs Kinetico

Kinetico, founded in 1970 in Newbury, Ohio, is the most distinct design of the four. Its softeners use no electricity, timers or computers. Twin tanks regenerate on demand, driven by water flow. Kinetico publishes a 10-year warranty on its Premier XP line and 5 years on its Signature Series, and it is sold through independent dealers.

If a non-electric softener is your top priority, Kinetico is built around it. Our dual-tank softener also delivers soft water around the clock: one tank serves the house while the other regenerates. It is installed by the owner, backed by a lifetime warranty, and built with NSF-certified components.

Honest Water vs RainSoft

RainSoft dates to 1953 in Illinois. It is a brand of Aquion, which Pentair acquired in 2019. Independent RainSoft dealers handle sales and installation, and the brand offers a free in-home water test and consultation.

We start the same way, with a free in-home water test. The difference is who shows up afterward: at Honest Water NC the owner installs every system personally, with no subcontractors, and stays your contact for phone support for as long as you own it.

Honest Water vs EcoWater

EcoWater traces back to 1925, when founder Lynn Lindsay patented an automatic water softener. It is part of the Marmon Group, a Berkshire Hathaway company, and sells through independent dealers. EcoWater says many of its softeners are independently certified, including by NSF, and it also makes a salt-free anti-scale line.

We offer both approaches too: a salt-based dual-tank softener for true soft water and a salt-free conditioner for lighter hardness or sodium-restricted homes. Our salt vs salt-free guide explains which fits your water.

How to Compare Quotes

Whichever brand you choose, these are the details that decide what you actually get.

Your hardness number

A softener is sized to hardness times household water use. Get the reading in grains per gallon from an actual test of your water.

Metered or timer valve

A metered valve regenerates only when you have used the capacity, which saves salt and water every year.

Warranty in writing

Check what the warranty covers, for how long, and who honors it if the dealer changes hands.

Who installs it

Ask whether the installer is the company you are buying from or a subcontractor.

Own, finance or rent

Compare the total cost over the years you expect to stay in the home, not just the monthly figure.

Chlorine and well water

A softener alone does not remove chloramine, iron or sulfur. Make sure the quote matches everything your test found.

Common Questions

Is Kinetico better than Culligan?

They are built differently. Kinetico softeners are non-electric twin-tank units with a published 10-year warranty on Premier XP. Culligan sells through dealers who also offer rentals. Results depend on the local dealer, so compare written quotes based on a test of your own water.

Does Culligan rent water softeners?

Yes. Culligan's site describes month-to-month and long-term rental agreements, plus rent-to-own options, with terms that vary by dealer and area.

Who owns RainSoft and EcoWater?

RainSoft is a brand of Aquion, which Pentair acquired in 2019. EcoWater is part of the Marmon Group, a Berkshire Hathaway company.

What does Honest Water NC install?

Honest Water Co systems: softeners, whole-home carbon filtration, reverse osmosis and well water treatment, built with NSF-certified components and installed by the owner, with a lifetime warranty.
